The following foods are acceptable during Phase 1 of The South Beach Diet:
- Certain Meats and Poultry
- Beans
- Certain vegetables
- One serving of nuts daily
- Low-fat cheeses
- Eggs
- Fats and oils
- Sugar substitutes
- Specific treats such as sugar-free gelatin, hard sugar-free candy, and fudge pops
